🪓 Bocca della Veritá, or The Mouth of Truth, is my most favorite Roman sculpture! Weighing around 2800 pounds, this massive marble disk is said to have been used as a lie detector during the Middle Ages. Trials would take place and, according to legend, anyone who was suspected of lying was ordered to put his hand inside the gaping mouth of this pagan frieze.
🪓 On the other side, hidden from view, was an axeman. If the unsuspecting defendant was thought to be guilty of lying, the executioner would swiftly chop off his hand. Mamma mia!
🪓 Resting just outside the doors of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin, The Mouth of Truth has been used as a whimsical lie detector in a number of movies, most famously the 1953 romance Roman Holiday in which the carving was a major plot device.
🪓 Dress as you wish to visit; but, if you decide to enter the church to see St. Valentine’s skull, you’ll want to make sure your shoulders and knees are covered. With its gorgeous Cosmatesque floors, Romanesque bell tower and Gothic canopy, this beautiful medieval church is worth a visit in its own right. I, Sandy, solemnly swear you won’t regret it. x
🎈Notes from the road, Flyover Country, 25 February 24, 1:14 p.m. 🎈So, where were we? Oh, yeah. When last we saw one another, it was November 2023 and I was helicoptering over Venice, right? Right.
🎈From Venice, I returned to Florence for awhile, and then I circled back to Rome to spend a couple of weeks at the incomparable @villaspallettitrivelli to celebrate the Christmas holiday, albeit slightly early.
🎈From Rome, it should have been a cake walk home. But then Air France went and pissed me off. So, I decided to cruise across the Atlantic instead by way of France, Spain and Portugal. Ultimately, it added an extra three weeks to my itinerary, but who cares?
🎈 Actually, Mike probably cared, but he loves me and I can’t say I blame him. Sure, I’m crazy, but I’m a shit ton of fun, too. Plus, I think unpredictability keeps your mind sharp and your heart young. So, really, when you think about it, I’m kind of a traveling mystic healer slash life coach, yes? Yes.
🎈 Then I stayed really, really quiet for a minute. But guess what? My van is ready! Yep, that’s right. Claus Van Bülow is finally completed and I’m on a plane to Phoenix to pick him up right now! The whole project has been rather exciting. I bought a van I’ve never seen, sketched out a design I’ve never road-tested and then hired the guys at Boho Camper Vans to build it out and — damn, that was fast! Just landed in Phoenix! Brb, y’all! x Sandy
🚁 Impulse purchase, y’all! See this helicopter behind me? Well, I’m going to board this helicopter and fly it over Venice. My original plan included flying it myself, but the pilot said no. But I’ve had two glasses of Prosecco in the lounge, which will come in handy should Lorenzo need assistance. I called shotgun 😏 x Co-pilot Sandy 🚁
